Reassigned Plastic
My name is Louise, seven years ago I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer, my whole perspective of life changed forever.
I became more aware of how precious life is. I started seeing the world in a different light. Depression became a daily battle and I desperately needed something to focus my energy on.
drinking water from a plastic bottle. I looked at the bottle, and thought about how I could prolong it’s life, prevent it from being another floating statistic. Could I change it into something we could keep.
After hours of experimentation, and with a great deal of trial and error, I melted sections of the bottle over the flame of a tea-light. The plastic took on its own life and moved delicately around the heat from the flame, creating a new form. Each piece became unique, and individually beautiful.
I love the different forms the plastic can take. I feel inspired and the art form which has become Phantoplasmic has given me a new perspective and understanding. Through my illness and recovery I have had to change and adapt, and in some ways have gone through a re-birth. The plastic I work with mirrors the path I have taken, no longer something that would be thrown away but a piece of treasure to keep.
The end of something can actually be the beginning of something new and magical.
My medium is plastic - mostly recovered plastic bottles.
My inspiration is this beautiful planet - a planet which is slowly drowning in plastic waste.
A glimpse into my plastic world
